'A lush compendium of ornaments, textiles and other objects associated with the gold-working cultures from the ancient Americas' - Wall Street Journal

A beautiful book exploring luxury arts created in the ancient Americas

This handsome book is published to accompany an exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York which features more than three hundred works of art. It traces the development of gold working and other luxury arts in the Americas from antiquity until the arrival of Europeans in the early sixteenth century.

Golden Kingdoms features works from recent excavations in Peru, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Mexico and explores artistic practices as well as the historical, cultural, social, and political conditions in which luxury arts were produced, alongside their religious meanings and ritual functions.

Through a series of chapters on ancient metallurgy and specific cultures and materials, the book, like the gold, follows a route to the north. The same is true of the concluding catalogue of objects from the central Andes, the northern Andes and Central America, and Mesoamerica.

With beautiful images illustrating the rich diversity of objects and the materials used to make them, this thorough book offers an insight into the values of different cultures in the ancient Americas.
