Published to accompany an exhibition at MoMA, this richly illustrated catalogue featuring more than 200 works, explores Paul Gauguin's experimental approach to his sculpture, printmaking and drawing.
The book focuses on Gauguin's rarely seen prints and transfer drawings and the ways that these then developed into and related to his better known painting and artwork. Created in several discrete bursts of activity from 1889 until his death in 1903, these remarkable works on paper reflect Gauguin’s experiments with a range of media, from radically "primitive" woodcuts that extend from the sculptural gouging of his carved wood reliefs, to jewel-like watercolour monotypes and large mysterious transfer drawings.
