This exhibition catalogue for a show at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art explores the remarkable yet relatively unknown response of Scottish artists to the development of modern art in the first half of the 20th century. The book charts Scottish modernism from its beginnings in the first decade of the century, when J.D. Fergusson and S.J. Peploe experienced the radical new work produced in Paris by artists such as Picasso and Matisse, to the turn of the 1950s, when emerging Scottish artists like Stephen Gilbert and Eduardo Paolozzi were at the forefront of European contemporary art.
The book includes creations by some of Scotland’s artistic giants, including FCB Cadell and William McCance, alongside works by more unfamiliar artists, such as Margaret Mellis and Benjamin Creme and is a fascinating exploration of Scottish artists’ contribution to the great movements of Modern art, from Fauvism to Surrealism.
