Arms & Armour in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen: European Armour
The Royal Collection holds one of the finest collections of arms and armour in the world. This catalogue raisonné is the first since 1904 to cover significant elements of this substantial and important collection in comprehensive detail. The catalogue includes more than 250 pieces of European armour, comprising complete armours, individual pieces, shields, horse armour and spurs, many of which were commissioned or collected by the royal family over a period of 500 years.More than 500 colour images are used to illustrate the collection, including intricate decorative details and makers’ marks. Essays cover the provenance of the collection and the ways in which arms and armour were displayed in the royal palaces from the sixteenth century up to the present day. Beautifully produced, the volume highlights the most celebrated items in the Collection including the famous armour garniture made for Henry VIII in around 1540, on display at Windsor Castle, which was enlarged on several occasions to accommodate the King's weight gain and was heat-treated to make it five times stronger than iron.
