Art from Milingimbi : Taking Memories Back
A beautiful book about Milingimbi and the artists working there in the 1950s
While there has been great interest in art from western and northeastern Arnhem Land and Ramingining, there has been little written or published on the exemplary art of Milingimbi. Art from Milingimbi, developed in close collaboration with the Milingimbi community, is the first publication about Milingimbi and the exemplary artists working there in the 1950s.
It presents for the first time sixty-two exquisite bark paintings by fifteen artists, oncluding Binyinyuwuy, Buranday, Dayngangan, Dawidi, Djäwa, Djimbarrdjimbarrwuy, Lipundja and Makani, as well as ceremonial and utilitarian objects from a unique collection held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Together with essays on the artists, art and history of Milingimbi, and historic and contemporary photographs, this book provides readers with a unique insight into the artists, their culture and their connection to place.
