Barbara Hepworth: The Hospital Drawings
'powerful, and so very beautiful' - The Independent
Barbara Hepworth is one of England’s best loved sculptors and an important figure in the development of international abstract art. Between 1947 and 1949, Barbara Hepworth produced around 80 drawings of surgeons at work. This period of activity followed the hospitalisation of Hepworth's daughter at the Elizabeth Orthopaedic Hospital, Exeter and Hepworth's friendship with the surgeon, Norman Capener. This book, which is the companion book to a 2012 exhibition at the Hepworth, Wakefield and Pallant Art Gallery, sheds light on that two-year period of Barbara Hepworth’s life.
Hepworth’s Hospital Drawings are all illustrated here alongside images from Hepworth’s only surviving hospital sketchbook. Also in the book is the full text of Hepworth's lecture about the importance of the hospital drawings to her sculptural practice, together with essays tracing the development of the remarkable Hospital Drawings and the deep and lasting friendship of Hepworth and Norman Capener.
