Gainsborough's Landscapes : Themes and Variations
'The overwhelming impression is one of serenity and tranquillity, drama subdued and beauty evoked. Here are huge and graceful trees, cloud-filled milky skies, and clumps of humans, travelling peasants who are all dependent on their livestock for their livelihood' - The Arts Desk
Gainsborough’s Landscapes: Themes and Variations is the companion book to an exhibition at Bath's Holburne Museum - the first exhibition in fifty years devoted solely to the artist's landscape paintings and drawings.
The richly illustrated volume brings together remarkable works from public and private collections, many of them little known and some not previously exhibited. It shows the evolution of his style from early naturalistic landscapes in the Dutch manner to dramatic and imaginary scenery. The paintings are examined by looking at 'themes and variations' within his landscape oeuvre.
