Horst: Photographer of Style
'This is a one-volume encyclopedia that will offer its reader everything from education to just sheer enjoyment and pleasure...Horst: Photographer of Style is the type of fashion/photography coffee table book that will continue to give new perspectives with each reading' - New York Journal of Books
A beautiful book about the photographer, Horst - the catalogue for the critically acclaimed exhibition at the V&A.
Published for the V&A's 2014/5 exhibition, this exhibition catalogue is the definitive overview of the career of the photographer, Horst P. Horst. Born in Germany in 1906, he trained at the Bauhaus before starting work for French Vogue in 1931.
The book covers his photographs of creations from the leading couturiers of Paris and New York and portraits of Hollywood greats including Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Noel Coward and Steve McQueen. The catalogue also includes Horst's exquisite collages of natural forms and his little-known travel photographs.
Editor-in-chief of American Vogue, Anna Wintour, provides the foreword, reflecting on Horst’s work for the magazine. Other contributors include Glenn Adamson, Martin Barnes, Philippe Garner, Robin Muir, Terence Pepper, Shawn Waldron, Claire Wilcox and Oliver Winchester.

'With a foreword by Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, and contributions by a stellar cast of experts, this elegant book explores Horst s life, work and wide-ranging influences. From his instantly recognisable Vogue covers and celebrity portraits to his Patterns From Nature series of abstracts and little-known travel photography, this is a strikingly stylish visual journey' - The Lady
'Horst: Photographer of Style is a richly illustrated survey of the single-monikered image maker whose work graced the pages of Vogue for six decades…the book is a rich history of a life spent chronicling the intersecting worlds of art, fashion, design, theater, Hollywood and high society' - Los Angeles Times
'Horst: Photographer of Style is the type of fashion/photography coffee table book that will continue to give new perspectives with each reading and is a must for those who have even the slightest interest in either of those topics…we really get to see the full breadth of his work. This stunning and detailed overview…is about as apt a title as one can get; it is clear, simple, and spot on. As said, what is so wonderful here is that the reader is exposed to a 360-degree view of Horst. This is not a book that one can recommend strongly enough because Horst may have set the bar or the platinum standard for so many genres of photography. This is a one-volume encyclopedia that will offer its reader everything from education to just sheer enjoyment and pleasure' - New York Journal of Books
