Sir John Soane (1753-1837) is one of England's greatest architects. John Soane Architect: Master of Space and Light is a lavishly illustrated catalogue produced for his 1999 exhibition at the Royal Academy.
The book provides a comprehensive survey of Soane's life and career, from birth, through his lifelong work with the Royal Academy and his private and family difficulties, to his influence on later architects.
Contributors discuss all of the architect's major commissions, including the Dulwich Picture Gallery, Pitshanger Manor, the Law Courts at Westminster and Soane's masterpiece, the Bank of England, demonstrating the timeless qualities of his style, and his masterly handling of space, light and surface.
It reproduces more than 100 of Soane's drawings and contains specially commissioned photographs of his original architectural models and existing buildings.
