'a truly revelatory voyage through art and history' - The Guardian
An elegant publication draws exploring the vibrant art of magic realism.
This catalogue accompanied the exhibition “Magic Realism: Art in Weimar Germany 1919-33” at the Tate Modern, London from July 2018 to July 2019 and features artworks from the George Economou Collection and Tate Collection. The book features essays exploring how artists responded to the new technologies and increasing urbanisation of the 20s; religion as well as the rise of popular, public entertainments.
The paintings and etchings are reproduced to a high quality but are within the essays rather than in a separate plate section. As a result, they vary in size from full plate to quite small. The book also includes contains a political and cultural chronology from 1914 to 1939.
A great record of a vibrant chapter in art history.
