Pink Floyd : Their Mortal Remains
'Ambitious, fascinating' - Telegraph
This is the first book ever produced with full access the Pink Floyd archive. Published to accompany the V&A's major exhibition, Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains, celebrates 50 years of one of the greatest bands of all time.
The book is a handsome publication with a lenticular cover inspired by band’s The Dark Side of the Moon album artwork. The first section contains six essays by authors including Jon Savage, Howard Goodall and Rob Young examining what makes the band truly special, from the mythology underpinning their work, their experimentation with technology to create new sounds and their staging. These essays cleverly weave in snapshots and recollections, as well as firsthand stories and insights of the three eras of the band – the Syd Barrett era, the Roger Waters era, and the David Gilmour era.
The book is richly illustrated throughout with vibrant and crisp photographs and reproductions of notes, memorabilia and illustrations from the personal collections of people closely associated with the band over the years. Previously unseen content includes sketches from Roger Walters, handwritten lyrics for The Wall and new photography of Pink Floyd’s instruments, some of which have been carefully recreated and photographed anew, as a way of restoring them to public view.
It ends with a chronological overview of the band’s albums, each of which is introduced on the page by Pink Floyd biographer Mark Blake, complemented by rare photographs of recording sessions, behind-the-scenes snaps from album cover shoots and touring shows.
Their Mortal Remains is a beautiful visual record of the 50 years of Pink Floyd. Those new to the band will find it contains everything they could want to learn, while old hands will find themselves reminded of details they may have long forgotten.
