'Spiritual dramas, everyday street figures, a child learning to walk, wind rushing through trees, elephants, lions: a lifetime’s visual pleasure is contained within this exceptionally beautifully produced first colour volume of Rembrandt’s complete graphic oeuvre — over a thousand works, each demonstrating supreme virtuosity of hand and eye, unrivalled expression of the human heart' - FT

An XXL monograph - the first-ever collection gathering Rembrandt's complete works on paper

Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669) stands as one of the most important painters in Western art, but nowhere else do we encounter his inimitable talent more so than in his drawings and etchings. Hinged upon experimentation and expressive line work, they garnered him unparalleled recognition from his contemporaries.

Using pen and brush, silverpoint and charcoal as well as coloured chalks and ink, he drew on various types of paper which he also sometimes dyed beforehand. Commemorating the 350th anniversary of the artist's death, this stunning XXL monograph is the first-ever collection gathering Rembrandt's complete works on paper. Through the 708 drawings, brilliantly printed in colour for the first time, and 314 etchings in pristine reproductions, we discover Rembrandt's keen eye, deft hand, and boundless depth of feeling like never before and above all, we witness that he was far more than just a painter.

One of the FT's and the Spectator's Best Books of 2019.

Reviews

'Taschen’s outsize, close-up format works superbly for Rembrandt, who built his compositions on intricate details evoked in fabulously free, loose marks, every stroke its own drama, animating portraits, spiritual narratives, everyday scenes; texture, colour, light all resonate here. A companion volume is Taschen’s equally engrossing giant catalogue of Rembrandt drawings' - FT

'The emphasis is not on text, but on reproductions of high quality and impressive size. In the case of the drawings, which were often done on scraps of paper, they are often far larger than the originals. David Hockney - famously a believer in bigger pictures - is an enthusiastic fan. He's right: here are Rembrandt works on paper as you've never seen them before' - The Spectator
