'This powerful .. collection of images and commentary (some culled from .. personal correspondence) reveals war’s profound, often devastating impact on the people who fight it, the people who survive it, and the people—like McCullin—who watch it unfold.'  - American Profile  A lone anti-war protester confronts police in Whitehall during the Cuban Missile Crisis, London, 1962

Published to support the Imperial War Museum's exhibition, Shaped by War traces war photographer, Don McCullin's entire career and provides an excellent introduction to his work.

This beautifully produced volume reproduces contact sheets and magazine spreads from his time at the Sunday Times Magazine as well as some of his less well-known colour work. The commentary is taken from many hours of interviews with McCullin that were filmed for the exhibition. For many images, we get his personal insight into what he was doing when the image presented itself to him and why he took that specific photograph.

The book is sized to match the original Sunday Times Magazine, where so much of his work first appeared.
