'The show is its own knockout experience requiring no explanations if you are at all intrigued by painters painting. But the catalogue adds a layer of fascination with clever comparisons between other people’s art and Soutine’s. It might be portraits of uniformed figures by artists more or less of his own time — whether Van Gogh, Cézanne or Gwen John — or portraits of the high and mighty by artists of the historic past such as Fouquet, Rembrandt or Velázquez.' - The Evening Standard  Soutime portrait Chaim Soutine (1893-1943) produced some of the most powerful and expressive portraits of modern times.  This book accompanies a major 2017 exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery, London, which focuses upon one of his most important series of portraits; his paintings of cooks, waiters and bellboys who sat for him in Paris and the South of France during the 1920s.

When he started the series, Soutine was living in near-poverty as a struggling artist. These portraits helped to lift him out of these desperate circumstances as they were soon admired by friends and become prized by collectors. Today, they are considered among his greatest achievements.

This publication brings together the most comprehensive group of Soutine's portraits. The book features the 21 paintings within the show. Each is reproduced as a full-size colour plate (allowing for the format, either half or full-length) with an accompanying description. The paintings are supplemented by several full-page details and some 47 supporting illustrations of related paintings, comparative works, photographs and other useful references, many of which are in colour.

Essays consider the place of these works in Soutine`s oeuvre, their context within “School Of Paris” painting and how they relate to the commercial world of hotels in the period in which they were painted. An informative and handsome book to add to your art library.
