The Printed Image : The Flowering of Japan's Woodblock Printing Culture
Cologne’s Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst has been collecting Japanese woodblock prints and books for more than 100 years, and this handsome publication brings together the best of its holdings in a major new survey of the art form.
Alongside hand-coloured pieces of the 17th century, the book features coloured woodblock prints from the worlds of entertainment and the Kabuki theatre of the 18th and 19th centuries; depictions of historical warriors; landscape prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige; privately commissioned calendar prints and modern Shin-hanga from the Taisho period onwards.
The Printed Image offers a chance to rediscover Japan’s groundbreaking woodblock printing culture.
