The Vulgar: Fashion Redefined
'delightfully subversive' - The Telegraph
This handsome exhibition catalogue written by Judith Clark is from a recent show at the Barbican and looks at vulgarity and taste in fashion. The book features some 120 objects including Manolo's thigh-high boots for Rihanna, a pink suit covered in children's book illustrations and a circus ringmaster outfit depicting an elephant's trunk rising out of a skirt.
The Vulgar: Fashion Redefined weaves together historic dress, haute couture and ready-to-wear fashion, manuscripts and photography with literary quotes and transcripts of interviews with leading designers including Manolo Blahnik, Hussein Chalayan, Christian Lacroix and Zandra Rhodes.
While the book raises more questions than it answers it is a fun collection of daring pieces representing some of the most innovative ideas and rebellious minds in fashion history.
