A thoughtful catalogue demonstrating the breadth of Whistler's artistic achievement

Whistler was a skilled oil and watercolour painter, printmaker, designer, teacher, critic and polemicist who had close links with the United States, France and England. This second hand catalogue accompanies an exhibition  of the artist's work at the Tate Gallery, the Musée d'Orsay and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in 1994-95.

Many of the artist's important works are in collections that restrict lending, a fact contributing to the lack of earlier large exhibitions. However, extensive research by the curators, Richard Dorment, Nicolai Cikovsky, Jr and Margaret F. MacDonald, identified a significant number of works that were available for inclusion in this retrospective exhibition.

Five essays, illustrated with a total of 96 b/w figures, address the artist's life and work, and his links to the three countries. Richard Dorment wrote `James McNeill Whistler, 1834-1903' and `Whistler and British Art'; `Whistler and America' by Nicolai Cikovsky, Jr with Charles Brock; `Whistler and France' by Geneviève Lacambre and `Whistler for President!' by Margaret F. MacDonald. The Catalogue comprises 205 works, including oils and watercolours, pastels, drawings and prints, which are reproduced in colour. They range chronologically from the etching "La Mère Gérard", 1858, to "Portrait of George W. Vanderbilt", 1897-1903.
