American Modern: Hopper to O'Keeffe
'American modernism in the years before Abstract Expressionism is the focus of this exhibition, featuring iconic works from MoMA's collection by Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, George Bellows. Alfred Stieglitz and Andrew Wyeth, among other big names' - Time Out
This book accompanied MoMa's 2013/4 exhibition on American art made between 1915 and 1950. Organised thematically and featuring paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculpture, the publication brings together some of the Museum's most celebrated masterworks by artists such as Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Sheeler, Charles Burchfield and Stuart Davis.
While the still lifes, portraits, and urban, rural, and industrial landscapes vary in style, approach, and medium, they reflect on the cultural preoccupations of the rapidly changing American society in the first half of the 20th Century.
The book includes beautifully reproduced colour plates of the works including Edward Hopper's House by the Railroad (the first painting to enter the museum's permanent collection in 1930), Georgia O'Keeffe's Farmhouse Window and Door, and Charles Sheeler's American Landscape as well as sculptures by Elie Nadelman and watercolour paintings from Jacob Lawrence's Migration series.
