Edward Bawden Scrapbooks
'Wondrous almanacs of one man’s sensibility, their every page bulges with interest and beauty' - The Guardian
Edward Bawden Scrapbooks were assembled over a period of more than 55 years and contain all kinds of ephemera. Among the things he stuck in beside his own sketches and works-in-progress are newspaper cuttings, cigarette cards, bus tickets as well as letters and Christmas cards from his various artistic friends, among them Peggy Angus, Edward Ardizzone, John Betjeman, Muirhead Bone, Evelyn Dunbar, Enid Marx, John Piper and AJA Symons.
Every aspect of his life is captured from the wonderful sketches of snails he created for his children to the poignant telegram sent by his wife informing him of the death of Tirzah Ravilious which is pasted above Tirzah’s Christmas card from 1950.
Beautifully designed and illustrated with over 250 images taken from these books - part of the permanent collection of the Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden, Edward Bawden Scrapbooks reveals this wonderful and at times eccentric collection and provides a new insight into one of the most popular artists of 20th-century Britain.
