'A superbly assembled survey of the Endeavour collections … a splendid and worthy contribution to Enlightenment studies' - Literary Review

A fascinating and richly illustrated book telling the story of the Endeavour voyage through the Endeavour's collection

When English naturalist Joseph Banks (1743–1820) accompanied Captain James Cook on his historic mission into the Pacific on the Endeavour, he took with him a team of collectors and illustrators. The team returned with an unprecedented collection of artefacts; specimens of stunning birds, fish and other animals as well as thousands of plants, most seen for the first time in Europe. They produced, too, remarkable landscape and figure drawings of the peoples encountered on the voyage along with detailed journals and descriptions of the places visited.

This companion book to an exhibition in Lincoln's The Collection pulls together the full richness of The Endeavour’s collections in one place.  Included in the volume are exquisite botanical drawings, a selection of ethnographic objects from the Endeavour’s haul, portraits of key personalities aboard the ship, scale models and plans of Endeavour itself and drawings of people and places visited during the mission are reproduced.
