From October 22, 2026, to February 28, 2027, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain will present The Harvest Season, the first exhibition of its scope in France dedicated to Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama. A multidisciplinary artist, Mahama has gained an international reputation for his monumental installations made using collected materials, archives, and abandoned industrial heritage that he resuscitates to construct new imaginaries. Guided by the idea of democratizing access to art, he has founded three art centers in the northern Ghanaian city of Tamale since 2019.
For his exhibition at the Fondation Cartier, Mahama will create site-specific installations, alongside other invited artists: Dorothy Akpene Amenuke, Gideon Appah, James Barnor, the Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (CATPC), Courage Dzidula Kpodo & Postbox Ghana, Zohra Opoku, Tjaša Rener, and Feda Wardak.
Richly illustrated, the publication accompanying the exhibition will offer an in-depth exploration of Mahama’s collective, educational, and community-based practice and vision, developed through his artworks and art centers. Highlighting the similarities between his approach and that of the artists he has invited to take part in the exhibition, it will shed light on the connections between the Ghanaian art scene and other regions of the world. Essays by scholars and the exhibition’s curators will examine Mahama’s practice and Ghana’s cultural history, as well as the works of the participating artists.
