The Humbert Collection at the Museum of Ethnography in Neuchatel contains some 140 vintage photographs collected between 1863 and 1864 in Japan and is an invaluable visual account of the transition from the Edo period to the Meiji period. The collection which has never been published before contains some of the earliest photos by Felice Beato and Shimooka Renjô. The book also includes infrared photographs revealing new data on the back of the prints.
