Tales of Our Time
This exhibition catalogue accompanying a show at the Guggenheim features newly commissioned works by artists Chia-En Jao, Kan Xuan, Sun Xun, Sun Yuan & Peng Yu, Tsang Kin-Wah, Yangjiang Group, and Zhou Tao. The artworks on view investigate issues related to Chinese art, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Chinese-speaking diaspora.
Working in a range of mediums, including video, sculpture, installation, mixed media on paper, and participatory performance, these artists are unified by their distinctive and independent practices that poetically balance politics and aesthetics. The exhibition offers a heterogeneous view of contemporary art from China and highlights tensions between individual narratives and the constructions of mainstream history.
Featuring two scholarly essays, artwork descriptions, and artist biographies, this volume presents an unconventional examination of the artists. In seven commissioned short stories, Chinese and American writers explore contemporary society through the art of storytelling.
All of the catalogue texts, including the commissioned pieces and introductory essays from Weng and Hou, are presented in both English and Simplified Chinese.

Find out more about the exhibition with this video of Curator Xiaoyu Weng where she explains how she invited each artist in "Tales of Our Time" to respond to a set of keywords: territory, borders, boundaries, and divides. She also discusses how the works featured in the exhibition are united by the artists' use of storytelling.
